The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is a self-report questionnaire that assesses sleep quality and disturbances over the past month. It’s used globally to screen for insomnia and related concerns.
What It Measures
Seventeen items cover seven components—sleep latency, duration, efficiency, disturbances, daytime dysfunction, medication, and subjective quality. Items are rated on a scale (0–3).
Scoring and Interpretation
Component scores are summed for a total range of 0–21. A total score >5 typically indicates poor sleep quality. Creyos Health automatically scores and flags elevated results over time.
How It Relates to Cognition
Poor sleep can impair attention, memory, and executive functioning. Paired with Creyos tasks, the PSQI helps clinicians understand how sleep patterns may affect cognition and daily performance.
Psychometric Properties
Widely validated with strong reliability. PSQI is the standard in sleep research and clinical assessment.
Clinical Considerations
While not a diagnostic tool for sleep disorders, a high PSQI score warrants further evaluation and may suggest behavioral or medical interventions.
